You must have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and received an Honorable or General (Under Honorable Conditions) discharge, or be currently serving.
Current service members may join when they also meet the qualifying-service requirement.
Service in a war, campaign, or expedition on foreign soil or in hostile waters, established through an authorized qualifying award, receipt of Hostile Fire or Imminent Danger Pay, or qualifying Korea service.
Wartime service, overseas service, and military ribbons do not all qualify. Review the exact award and service conditions with the Post.
Military records must establish an authorized medal, ribbon, badge, or insignia recognized by VFW, including any required device or service conditions.

Qualifying Korea service is another pathway. Travel orders or other military documentation may establish it, including service before the Korea Defense Service Medal was introduced.

Every qualifying detail does not have to appear on your DD-214. VFW guidance allows appropriate supporting military records. The authorized Post representative will determine what establishes your service.
Ask the Post to arrange a private review with an authorized representative. Please do not upload discharge documents or send sensitive records, Social Security numbers, or detailed service histories through ordinary website messages.
