Financial Assistance for Service Members
National grants to help eligible active-duty households with daily necessities during qualifying military-related hardship.
This is the current national program listed on VFW’s financial-grants page. It provides assistance through case review, rather than a scholarship contest.
Who is eligible
The applicant must be the service member or an eligible dependent in DEERS. The member must be on active duty, including activated Guard/Reserve, with hardship caused by current deployment, a no-fault military pay error, or pending medical discharge for a qualifying service-connected injury or illness. The criteria exclude hardship from misconduct, civilian/legal/domestic issues, separation/divorce, financial mismanagement, or bankruptcy.
Entry requirements & materials
Provide current bills for the expenses requested and all documents required by the national online application. The caseworker may request additional evidence. The public FAQ does not provide a complete fixed upload checklist or essay requirement. Eligible categories can include current housing, vehicle, utility, childcare, and necessary medical expenses; the full rules explain exclusions.
How and where to submit
Use the application entry point on the official national financial-grants page. The FAQ describes an online “Apply Now” process; if it is not visible, contact the national program for its current secure application route. The program reviews claims and verifies bills with creditors. No Post, district, or Georgia judging deadlines are published. Do not send financial, medical, or identity records through this website.
Awards & support
Grants of up to $2,500 are paid directly to approved creditors. They are not loans and do not require repayment. Assistance depends on individual review.
Deadlines & stages
No cycle-specific dated deadline is confirmed for this listing. See the submission guidance and official rules for the published process.
