The VFW’s mission joins the fellowship of veterans of overseas conflicts with service to veterans, the military, and the wider community. It also calls for advocacy on behalf of all veterans. For Post 12239, that means keeping the needs of people in Jasper, Pickens County, and surrounding North Georgia communities at the center of our purpose.

We are committed to a Post where members can build friendships, share perspectives, and look after one another across generations of service. A conversation with someone who understands military life can offer a sense of belonging that lasts well beyond the time spent in uniform. Families share in the sacrifices of service; their well-being belongs in that conversation, too.

We believe veterans deserve to be heard, treated with dignity, and connected with reliable information about the benefits and support available to them. Our role begins with listening and helping people find the appropriate next step. The official resources linked on this website have their own eligibility rules, and reaching out for help does not require someone to qualify for VFW membership.

Remembrance and patriotism are equally central to our purpose: honoring those who died, respecting the experiences of those who returned, and caring for the country through service to our neighbors. Here in the North Georgia foothills, we seek to turn that commitment into thoughtful participation in community life, guided by the needs around us and the time and abilities our members can offer.

Our members are veterans who have served our country in foreign wars and qualifying overseas conflicts. That shared foundation gives VFW fellowship its particular meaning. Members may bring different branches, generations, and experiences of military life to the same table, while recognizing a common responsibility to one another.

VFW membership requires both honorable U.S. Armed Forces service (or current service) and qualifying service in a war, campaign, or expedition on foreign soil or in hostile waters. Official criteria include a qualifying campaign or expeditionary medal, ribbon, badge, or insignia; receipt of Hostile Fire Pay or Imminent Danger Pay; or 30 consecutive or 60 nonconsecutive days of service in Korea. Serving during wartime alone does not establish eligibility.

The national VFW guidance and a review of service records determine eligibility. Our membership page explains how to begin that conversation. This membership distinction does not narrow our concern for other veterans, their families, or the people who share our community.

In 1899, veterans returning from the Spanish-American War and the fighting in the Philippines began forming organizations for mutual support and to press for rights and benefits. Many had come home wounded or ill without the care or pensions they needed. Joining together gave them companionship and a stronger voice.

Those early organizations developed into the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States through a merger in 1914. Congress granted the VFW a federal charter in 1936. The 1899 origins, the 1914 merger, and the 1936 congressional charter are distinct milestones in the national organization’s history.

Post 12239 carries that tradition into our own time and place. Its meaning is practical: keep a place for fellowship, remember the people behind the names, listen when a fellow veteran needs support, and remain willing to serve. A national history becomes a local responsibility when members gather in Jasper and decide how to look after one another and contribute to the community.

A December 6, 2024 community announcement invited veterans, families, and neighbors to the institution of Post 12239 in Jasper on December 7, 2024. This records the announced institution gathering; it is not a substitute for the date on the VFW charter.

National VFW General Orders No. 6, issued in January 2025, announced authorization of the charter for Post No. 12239 in Jasper, Georgia. The orders confirm charter authorization but do not give the exact date printed on the Post’s charter. That date will be added when the original charter or an official VFW charter record is available.

The Georgia Secretary of State records October 18, 2025 as the formation date of SGT DAVID S COLLINS POST NO. 12239 VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS OF THE U.S., INC, a Georgia domestic nonprofit corporation, control number 25205605. This state incorporation milestone is separate from the Post’s VFW charter.

Together, these records place our local story within the longer VFW tradition while keeping each milestone tied to the evidence that supports it.
