Service took root on Church Street on May 2, 2026, as members of Jasper VFW Post 12239 brought tools, time, and a shared sense of purpose to Jasper City Cemetery. For the Post’s annual Day of Service, volunteers cleaned and maintained a neglected section of the grounds, giving care to a place that holds generations of local memory.
Twelve Post members contributed four hours each—a combined 48 volunteer hours. Working among the grave markers, they trimmed vegetation and tended the cemetery grounds.
The work carried meaning beyond a freshly maintained landscape. A 2024 archaeological report hosted by the City of Jasper describes Jasper City Cemetery as associated with the nearby Jasper United Methodist Church, with burials dating to the middle of the nineteenth century. Caring for this ground helps preserve a tangible connection to the people and families who came before us.
The local cleanup joined a wider tradition of veterans continuing to serve their neighbors. The VFW’s fifth annual Day of Service began May 2, 2026, launching a month of veteran-led community service projects across the country and around the world. Here in Jasper, that commitment became practical work: members showing up together and putting their effort into a community place deserving of care.
Post 12239 thanks the members who gave their Saturday to this project. Their 48 hours of service reflect a lasting promise to Jasper and Pickens County—to honor the past, care for our neighbors, and keep serving.
